DH 233 - Anesthesia/Analgesia for Dental Hygiene Therapy
Associated Term: Fall 2024
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Perform a thorough dental, medical, physical, and psychological evaluation of each patient to determine appropriate pain management therapy/techniques
2. Select appropriate anesthetic/analgesic based on the client’s dental, medical, physical and psychological assessment, the procedure to be performed, the duration needed and the maximum safe dosage
3. Practice preventive principles and techniques to decrease the potential for a medical emergency to occur during dental hygiene therapy
4. Administer a variety of specific injections, when indicated, to control pain during dental hygiene therapy
5. Administer nitrous oxide/oxygen conscious sedation, when indicated, by using titration to induce the proper level of sedation, monitoring the client during analgesia and oxygenating the client at the completion of the sedation period
