DH 228 - Oral Biology 1
Associated Term: Fall 2024
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Locate, identify and describe the gross anatomy of the external and internal aspects of the head and neck
2. Relate head and neck anatomy and physiology to oral health, disease and clinical procedures
3. Discuss various species of microorganisms found in the oral flora
4. Discuss composition and stages in the production of plaque
5. Discuss the role of bacteria in the development of caries and periodontal diseases
6. Discuss the ecology of a normal gingival crevice as it deteriorates into a periodontal pocket
7. Discuss the host response in periodontal diseases
8. Identify and state the functions of the muscles responsible for facial expression, mastication, and movement of the tongue; describe and discuss the innervation of these structures
9. Locate, identify and describe the major and minor salivary glands of the head and neck
10. Locate, identify and describe the bones of the human skull
11. Describe the anatomical structures of the temporomandibular joints and its role in the positions and movements of the mandible
12. Locate and trace the major arteries and veins of the head and neck with emphasis on the blood supply to the extra-and intraoral structures
13. Identify, locate and state the function of the superficial and deep lymph nodes of the head and neck
14. Locate and identify the cranial nerves and discuss their function
