PHL 203 - Theories of Reality
Associated Term: Fall 2024
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Explain the concepts of truth, reality and knowledge, the relationship between metaphysics and epistemology, and the challenges posed by relativism and skepticism
2. Identify notable figures in metaphysics and their contributions to the field
3. Explain concepts embedded in primary source material
4. Apply conceptual analysis to the relationship between matter and consciousness, life after death, free will, the existence of God and the meaning of life in the context of both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions
5. Examine their own beliefs in the light of various metaphysical theories
6. Apply conceptual analysis to contemporary problems and issues, such as whether criminals ought to be blamed and punished or rehabilitated or whether God and an afterlife are required to give life meaning
