Syllabus Information
CH 104 - Introduction to General Chemistry
Associated Term: Fall 2024
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand the Scientific Method, investigations of observable phenomena, and of the explanatory nature of Scientific Theories
2. Demonstrate an ability to gather and analyze physical data, identify and evaluate sources of uncertainty, and use and interconvert units of measure
3. In a laboratory setting, collect data, safely use common glassware, and apply lab techniques common in chemistry
4. Communicate information using appropriate, IUPAC, chemical terminology in a variety of ways (reports, exams, etc.)
5. Use quantitative problem-solving techniques to interconvert measurements and make chemical predictions
6. Predict chemical composition, shape and properties and to use this information to explain natural phenomenon on the nano and macroscopic scale. Given a chemical transformation, classify the reaction and describe and quantify the outcomes. Apply the Laws of Thermodynamics to describe and calculate changes in energy during transformations of matter
7. Demonstrate an understanding of Chemistry’s central role in a wide variety of fields (e.g., Materials Science, Biotechnology, Healthcare, Planetary Science, Environmental Science and Sustainability)
8. A respect for science as a work in progress, a refined curiosity about current unanswered questions in science, and sufficient background knowledge to present, analyze, and explain contemporary research efforts
