Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Read and interpret works of fiction at both a literal and figurative level 2. Identify and define significant literary devices (such as plot, character, setting, theme and point of view) for the purpose of meaningful interpretation 3. Interpret works of fiction within their contexts (e.g., literary/historical periods and influences, cultural and biographical background of authors or publication, authorial intentions and critical reception) 4. Demonstrate familiarity with social and political perspectives on fiction, such as those that consider race, gender, ethnicity, nationality and sexual orientation 5.
