HP 110 - Health Office Procedures
Associated Term: Winter 2024
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Describe and utilize appropriate communication skills including non-verbal communication and active listening. Describe barriers to communication and how to overcome them. Describe appropriate and inappropriate forms of communication, whether spoken, written, or electronic, with respect to employment and professionalism in a healthcare office setting
2. Describe and apply principles of confidentiality, and professional, ethical workplace behavior; work in compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and other legal or professional requirements; apply knowledge of these principles to make ethical decisions
3. Display sensitivity to the needs of a diverse clientele, including people with varying physical, mental, or cognitive abilities, religious or gender identities, and from diverse cultural and/or socioeconomic backgrounds
4. Negotiate issues in the workplace, including recognizing sexual harassment and how to prevent it, or deal with it if it occurs. Recognize, describe, and demonstrate assertive behavior and describe how it differs from passive and aggressive behavior, especially as it occurs in a healthcare context in interactions with both patients and co-workers
5. Explain general medical office procedures and provide individuals, clients and patients with healthcare information and education based on their specific individual needs; identify relevant community resources available to the patient
6. Perform telephone and in-person screening; demonstrate professional telephone techniques
7. Schedule and manage appointments including inpatient and outpatient admissions and procedures
8. Create, organize, and demonstrate filing procedures. File a patient’s medical record
9. Perform routine managerial duties such as incident reporting, giving feedback, stress management, and managing change/chaos
