Syllabus Information
BI 221 - Principles of Biology
Associated Term: Winter 2024
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Illustrate how conservation of the genetic code and the varying effects of mutations facilitate evolution. Describe the building blocks and synthesis of the major classes of biomolecules and the contribution of their three-dimensional structure to their functions (DNA, Proteins)
2. Model the processes by which evolution allows for the emergence of cell complexity and diversity
3. Describe and relate anabolic (photosynthesis) and catabolic (respiration and fermentation) pathways emphasizing the transformation of energy and matter (respiration)
4. Model cell components, emphasizing them as a system of interacting parts. Describe the building blocks and synthesis of the major classes of biomolecules and the contribution of their three-dimensional structure to their functions (Lipids)
5. Articulate how cells store, use, and transmit genomic information
6. Create models (e.g., cartoon, schematic, flow chart, etc.) to demonstrate biological concepts or systems
7. Read, annotate, and summarize the research question, experimental variables, and results in a primary or secondary research article
