Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Summarize the purposes served by the medical record 2. Develop an understanding of the role of the Health Information Management department in a healthcare facility 3. Describe the skills, knowledge, and abilities of health information professionals and roles in health information management 4. Differentiate the content of forms in the paper and electronic medical record 5. Evaluate the trend toward computer-based patient records and its effect on the HIM professional in all HIM roles 6. Examine storage and retrieval of patient data records 7. Examine and evaluate the communication styles and approaches to different types of health information roles 8. Describe appropriate communication skills, including non-verbal communication and active listening. Describe barriers to communication and ways to overcome the communication barriers.
