EMS 103 - Emergency Services Rescue
Associated Term: Winter 2022
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the role of the EMT at emergencies involving rescue operation. 2. Describe the organizational structures and functions of emergency services at an emergency scene. 3. Describe the process of “size-up” as it related to decision making for proper tactics and strategies. 4. Demonstrate the basic use of rescue techniques, including ropes, knots, ladders, SCBA, and other related items. 5. Demonstrate the use of portable fire extinguishers. 6. Describe the role of the EMT in extrication. 7. Describe the techniques that the EMT can use to gain access to or disentangle patients from vehicles. 8. Describe methods and appropriate times to utilize the following extrication equipment: porta-power, hand winch, pry axe, air chisel (optional), bale hook, linoleum knife, hacksaw, screwdriver, spring-loaded center punch, and other. 9. Demonstrate on programmed patients, the techniques of lifting and moving of patients in any situation presented. 10. Demonstrate on appropriate vehicles the techniques of gaining access to entrapped patients by use of all extraction equipment. 11. Demonstrate the correct usage of patient immobilization and removal equipment.
