Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Define general appearance and definitions of lesions, and the diagnostic process including: clinical, radiographic, historic, laboratory, surgical, therapeutic, and differential. 2. Describe and identify the clinical appearance of Fordyce's granules (spots), tori, varicosities, fissured tongue, geographic tongue, hairy tongue, ectopic tongue. 3. Describe radiographic and historical data relevant to cementoma. 4. Describe clinical and histological differences between leukoedema and linea alba. 5. List five cardinal visible signs and three systemic signs of inflammation. Describe the inflammatory process including three primary types of associated white blood cells and their functions. Describe the difference between acute and chronic inflammation. 6. Describe the healing process including: primary, secondary, and third intention; microscopic events. 7. Contrast the difference between hyperplasia, hypertrophy, attrition, abrasion and erosion. Describe the relationship of abrasion and bruxism. 8. Describe the clinical features and treatments for the following: aspirin burns, burns, traumatic ulcers, frictional keratosis, nicotine stomatitis, linea alba, solar cheilitis, mucocele, ranula, pyogenic granuloma, giant cell granuloma, irritation fibroma, epulis, papillary and gingival hyperplasia. Define sialothiasis. 9. Describe differences (radiographic, histologically, and clinically) between periapical granuloma, cyst and abscess. 10. Describe differences between inflammation and immune response. Describe the following: two types of lymphocytes, macrophage and their function, humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. 11. List four types and examples of hypersensitive reactions. 12. Describe the clinical features of three types of aphthous ulcers and three diseases associated with them. 13. Describe the clinical features and compare the following: urticaria, angioedema, fixed drug eruption, erythema multiform and lichen planus. 14. Describe the lesions and systemic signs of Riter's Syndrome. 15. Describe the oral manifestations of the following auto-immune diseases: Lupus E., Pemphigus V., Pemphigoid, Sjogrens and Behcet's. 16. Describe the clinical features of desquamative gingivitis. 17. Describe the route of transmission, organism, oral lesions, and how to make diagnosis of the following infectious diseases: Tuberculosis, Actinomycosis, Syphilis, Verruca V., Condyloma A., Primary Herpetic Gingivostomatitis. 18. Describe the four forms of oral candidiasis. 19. Describe the clinical features of the following: herpes labialism, herpes zoster. 20. Name the two diseases for which a cytologic smear is useful. List the four diseases associated with the Barr-Epstein virus. 21. Define inherited disorders. 22. Describe the embryonic development of the face and oral cavity. 23. Describe the difference between odontogenic and non odontogenic cysts and four cysts of each type which are extraosseous and four each that are intraosseous. 24. List and define three anomalies that affect the number of teeth. List and define two anomalies that affect the size of teeth. List and define five anomalies that affect the shape of teeth. Identify anomalies that affect eruption. 25. Define the difference between a malignancy and a benign lesion; leukoplakia and erythroplakia. 26. Define and describe clinical features and treatment for the following neoplasms: papilloma, Squamous cell carcinoma, V. Carcinoma, Basal cell carcinoma, ameloblastoma, myxoma, cementifying cementoma, ameloblastic fibroma, odontoma (complex and compound), lipoma, hemangioma, lymphangioma, Melanoma, tori, exostosis, osteoma, ossifying fibroma, Osteogenic sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and metastatic jaw tumors. 27. Describe the purpose of mitosis and meiosis. 28. List the four inheritance patterns. Describe what is meant by X-linked inheritance. State the inheritance pattern and describe the oral manifestations of the following: Cherubism, Mandibulofacial Dysostosis, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, and White spongy nevus. 29. List the four types of Amelogenesis Imperfecta. 30. Briefly compare and contrast the following: dentinogenesis imperfecta, amelogenesis imperfecta and dentin dysplasia (radiographically and clinically). 31. State the oral manifestations of the following: hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, Addison's. 32. Describe the radiographic features of Paget's disease. 33. Define rickets and osteomalacia. 34. Compare the cause and oral manifestations of the following: pernicious anemia, vitamin B-12 deficiency, and folic acid deficiency. 35. List two causes of T. Purpura. 36. Describe the difference between primary and secondary immunodeficiency. 37. List five oral manifestations of AIDS and the spectrum of the disease. 38.
