DH 120A - Clinical Dental Hygiene 3:Lecture/seminar
Associated Term: Spring 2020
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Recognize and identify specific organisms microscopically which are present in health and in disease. 2. Identify and describe the four microbiologic risk factors. 3. Utilize the microscope specimen for patient motivation. 4. Describe the learning process. 5. Discuss how health attitudes and value systems are developed. 6. Describe the "learning ladder continuum." 7. Define motivation, and explain the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. 8. Discuss principles of verbal and non-verbal communication to establish a therapeutic relationship with clients. 9. State Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs model. 10. Describe the Human Needs Theory as it relates to the Dental Hygiene Process of Care. 11. Describe methods used for obtaining client compliance. 12. Understand and utilize the appropriate strategies/skill for patient management. 13. Identify the four specific patient categories of dental fear/anxiety 14. Understand the etiology and relationship between fear and pain. 15. Define the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it relates to healthcare. 16. Differentiate between an acquired disability and a developmental disability. 17. Describe the types of homecare device available for the disabled patient. 18. Discuss the ways to modify home care devices to aid the disabled patient. 19. List the steps in proper wheel chair transfer. 20. Describe a “barrier-free” dental operatory. 21. Learn the importance of considering cultural beliefs in the implementation of dental hygiene care. 22. Learn the cultural barriers to oral healthcare. 23. Identify the relationship between socioeconomic status and access to care. 24. Identify how cultural beliefs shape attitudes and values related to oral health. 25. Describe the role of nutrients in oral development, both pre/post eruptive. 26. Review the functions and classifications of carbohydrates. 27. Differentiate between simple and complex carbohydrates. 28. Review the functions and classifications of fats. 29. Differentiate between saturated and polyunsaturated fats. 30. Review the functions and classifications of proteins. 31. Differentiate between complete and incomplete proteins. 32. Define the term mineral as it relates to human body functions. 33. List the most common minerals required for normal body function. 34. List and define the “water soluble” vitamins and describe their major functions. 35. List and define “fat soluble” vitamins and describe their major functions. 36. List oral manifestations of nutritional deficiencies and toxicities. 37. Explain the relationship between nutrition and oral health. 38. Discuss and be familiar with liquid and soft diets for dental clients. 39. Define and describe the signs and health effects of Anorexia Nervosa. 40. Define and describe the signs and health effects of Bulimia Nervosa. 41. Define EDO-NOS 42. Describe Binge Eating Disorder. 43. List the manners of tobacco consumption that negatively affect oral health. 44. Describe the hazardous agents associated with tobacco use. 45. Discuss the systemic effects of tobacco use. 46. Describe the behaviors and factors that influence nicotine addiction. 47. Describe the 5 A’s approach to tobacco cessation. 48. Discuss effective coping strategies for successful tobacco cessation. 49. Describe the role of nicotine replacement therapy in tobacco cessation. 50. Discuss the dental hygienist’s role related to oral health and tobacco use
