PN 102 - Practical Nursing 2
Associated Term: Winter 2020
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Access and interpret current, reliable information about selected pathophysiological processes, 2. Select, collect and interpret health data from medical records, and focused assessments based on knowledge of physiologic, clinical manifestations, developmental considerations, and potential complications and behavioral parameters of various chronic illness states. 3. Apply ANA Code of Ethics in the care of persons with a chronic illness, disability or reaching the end of life. 4. Use therapeutic communication skills in the development of caring relationships with clients and families. 5. Recognize and respond to potential and actual legal and ethical issues related to client autonomy. 6. Conduct both complete and focused nursing assessments based on knowledge of clinical manifestations of and developmental considerations in selected pathophysiological processes in adult patients in long-term care settings. 7. Interpret resulting findings including impact on: mental, functional status and ADL’s, coping strategies, living with chronic conditions, and impact of aforementioned on family. 8. Identify aspects that LPNs contribute to the development and implementation of a family-centered plan of care for a patient with a chronic illness or disability that incorporates evidence based intervention strategies, assessment data and an understanding of the patient’s perspective of the illness experience. 9. Provide safe, effective, age and culturally appropriate care to patients with chronic conditions including: a. Assisting patients with ADL’s and IADL’s b. Administering medications, including teaching on drugs and natural products. c. Administering other therapies including, oxygen, and teaching to include managing chronic conditions and wound care with supervision. 10. Address basic question about prognosis of illness or condition. 11. Provide guidance in health promotion activities. 12. Describe and demonstrate nursing responsibilities in pain management. 13. Use current, reliable sources of information to access pertinent information about drugs and natural products and to identify appropriate nursing interventions. 14. Consult with experienced registered nurses and other health care providers regarding delegation/supervision needs for patient care. 15. Begin to identify aspects of patient care that can be assigned to unlicensed assistive personal (UAPs). Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1.
