PN 101 - Practical Nursing 1
Associated Term: Winter 2020
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Identify members of the health care team and the ethical and legal responsibilities of the LPN as a member of the team. Perform within the LPN scope of practice. Recognize/reflect upon trends for practical nursing in the future, considering societal changes, roles and technical advances. 2. Demonstrate beginning understanding of how to use the nursing process for patient care and identify the difference between the LPN and RN roles in developing and implementing a care plan. 3. Demonstrate use of verbal and nonverbal communication skills, including therapeutic communication skills, in practice settings. 4. Recognize and begin to demonstrate accurate written and electronic documentation skills, practice of HIPAA and confidentiality measures. 5. Describe and demonstrate assessment techniques and other methods of gathering data for patient care. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of and the ability to apply principles of medical asepsis and infection control. 7. Discuss/identify behaviors appropriate for developmental stages through the lifespan. 8. Discuss and demonstrate age-appropriate health promotion care and education in the practice setting. 9. Identify the physiological and psychological effects of aging and how these changes would affect care of an adult, throughout the lifespan, with more intense focus on elderly persons. 10. Describe nutrition and hydration needs of patients in health and illness, as well as therapeutic diets commonly ordered in clinical settings. 11. Describe commonly used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) measures used by individuals and how these measures can be applied in patient care settings. 12. Discuss and demonstrate application of spiritual and cultural considerations in provision of patient care. 13. Identify basic principles of pharmacology and demonstrate the ability to calculate medication doses correctly. 14. Discuss assessment and care of patients with integumentary disorders. 15. Demonstrate beginning proficiency in performance of the following skills: basic nursing skills including vital signs, nursing history/data collection and physical assessments, focused assessments, non-parenteral medication administration, and utilizing appropriate measures to assess/ ensure patient safety and prevent falls.
