HE 209 - Human Sexuality
Associated Term: Winter 2020
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Evaluate the complex interaction between physiology, psychology, and sociology as it relates to the various ways sexuality can be expressed. 2. Apply knowledge of human sexuality to examine and evaluate sexual myths and misconceptions. 3. Utilize independent and critical thinking skills along with current best practices when making or evaluating sexual health decisions. 4. Examine the difference between evidence based and non-evidence based research related to sexuality. 5. Identify and describe basic male and female sexual anatomy and physiology. 6. Recognize the relationship between sexual health and improving one’s overall wellness. 7. Identify the major steps in one’s sexual development. 8. Evaluate the influences of physiology, psychology, and sociology on one’s sexual and gender identity. 9. Briefly outline and describe how attitudes toward homosexuality have evolved over time. 10. Recognize and examine culturally constructed biases related to sexual beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes. 11. Recognize the signs, symptoms, and health concerns of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). 12. Compare and contrast different models of sexual arousal and response. 13. Explore the diversity of sexual behavior and expression. 14. Discuss effective communication strategies and skills that facilitate healthy relationships. 15. Outline past and present methods of fertility management and evaluate their effectiveness, convenience, and sustainability. 16. Describe the physiological, psychological, and sociological processes of conception, pregnancy, and childbirth. 17. Recognize the initial warning signs of relationship abuse, including violent and/or demeaning communication, harassment, coercion, sexual assault, discrimination, and child abuse. 18. Outline strategies used in the prevention and resolution of both relationship and stranger related violence. 19. Analyze the physical, psychological, and social origins of sexual difficulties and their management and treatment. 20. Recognize the relationship between sexuality and both healthy and sustainable practices. 21. Discuss the importance of independent, critical thinking when evaluating sexual message in the media and when making sexual health-related decisions and purchases.
