ANTH 228 - Cultures of Mexico
Associated Term: Winter 2019
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Apply analytical skills to social phenomena in order to understand human behavior: Introduction, identification, and consideration of cultural anthropological concepts as these apply to the description and understanding of the indigenous cultures in contemporary Mesoamerica. 2. Apply knowledge and experience to foster personal growth and better appreciate the diverse social world in which we live: Comparison and contrast of contemporary indigenous Mesoamerican cultural forms (i.e., subsistence, economy, political and social structure, religion, etc.) with contemporary American culture; emphasis on both the diversity and unity of Mesoamerican indigenous cultures. 3. Understand the role of individuals and institutions within the context of society: Compares and contrasts American concepts and practices regarding the relationship between the individual and community with those of indigenous Mesoamerican concepts and practices. Discussion of the interconnectedness of cultural forms and practices (i.e., subsistence, economy, political and social structure, religion, etc.) 4. Assess different theories and concepts, and understand the distinctions between empirical and other methods of inquiry: Introduction and discussion of scientific methodology. Discussion and analysis of cultural anthropological theories of the persistence of indigenous cultures into modern times. Analysis of how well these theories are supported by the ethnographic evidence. 5. Utilize appropriate information literacy skills in written and oral communication: In-class analysis, evaluation, and discussion of ethnographies of indigenous peoples in modern Mesoamerica; take-home essay exams centered on identification of cultural patterns and evaluation of ethnographic resources. 6. Understand the diversity of human experience and thought, individually and collectively: Presentation of cultural anthropological descriptions of diverse indigenous communities in Mesoamerica (ethnographies) and their similarities and differences with contemporary American culture. 7. Apply knowledge and skills to contemporary problems and issues: Identification, analysis, and discussion of issues of indigenous ethnicity in a culturally diverse modern society.
