PTA 204 - PT Interventions - Neurological Dysfunctions
Associated Term: Fall 2018
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Interpret and analyze the interaction among multiple systems in performance of motor behaviors. 2. Analyze the impact of health and fitness sustained over the lifespan on motor skill performance. 3. Interpret the difference between new motor learning, as seen in a child and relearning of movement patterns, as seen in a patient with CNS dysfunction. 4. Analyze the role of the PTA in the examination of patients and clients with neurological impairments referred to physical therapy. 5. Select and interpret when and which neuromuscular examination procedures may be performed by the PTA. 6. Discuss the categories of intervention into practice including, functional training, retraining, and impairment training. 7. Differentiate between typical and atypical motor development. 8. Interpret the stages and areas of motor development including motor milestones. 9. Select standardized functional assessment tools and their use in assessment of patient progress and outcome. 10. Analyze various pediatric diagnoses that may be encountered in physical therapy. 11. Discuss how cerebral palsy influences typical development and motor control 12. Discuss the importance of positioning and normal postural alignment in optimizing neuromuscular tone and motor learning 13. Analyze the various lower extremity orthoses that may be used to help normalize tone during functional activities. 14. Interpret and review basic brain and spinal cord anatomy. 15. Interpret the signs and examples of developmental delay 16. Interpret and analyze the various developmental disabilities including but not limited to cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy and myelodysplasia. 17. Analyze the most common types of spinal cord injury and their primary sequelae. 18. Discuss autonomic dysreflexia and discuss why it is a medical emergency and what the PTA should do when it occurs. 19. Analyze the complications that may occur with spinal cord injury. 20. Differentiate between complete and incomplete spinal cord injury. 21. Analyze the motor levels and sensory neurologic levels of injury. 22. Identify and discuss the purposes of physical therapy for people with spinal cord injury. 23. Interpret the impact of spinal cord injury on physical, emotional, social, and psychological health. 24. Discuss and execute the plan of care, for an individual with a spinal cord injury during a case simulation. 25. Analyze the major causes of TBI. 26. Discuss the theoretical principles underlying neuro developmental treatment, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, and task oriented approaches to rehabilitation intervention. 27. Analyze functions of the brain and interpret these functions as they apply to clinical findings that occur due to injury to specific portions of the brain including spasticity, rigidity, dystonia, chorea, bradykinesia and athetosis. to the rest of term 28. Recognize the various types of CVAs. 29. Identify the data collection techniques that a PTA may employ to determine a patient’s progress within the PT’s plan of care. 30. Describe the types of lower and upper extremity orthotics, slings and support that may be used by clients with neurological conditions. 31. Apply knowledge of patient/client management for the individual who has sustained a stroke or traumatic brain injury to case studies and simulations. 32. Demonstrate knowledge of underlying pathology of various adult onset neurologic conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Guillain-Barre, post Polio syndrome and implement appropriate treatment program after consultation with the primary physical therapist. 33. Analyze the differences between normal and abnormal righting and equilibrium reactions in the pediatric and adult populations. 34. Apply knowledge of interventions for balance, equilibrium and coordination activities for patients with neurological dysfunction. 35. Select functional activities and ADLs into an established plan of care for a patient with neurological dysfunction. 36. Demonstrate an understanding of basic vestibular system understanding and treatment. 37. Implement appropriate changes in patient treatment plan after consultation with the primary physical therapist. lecture and lab 38. Recognize the cognitive, emotional, psychological and cultural components of any given illness or disability and discuss how these factor impact patient outcome. 39. Interpret signs and symptoms of psychiatric conditions, and or dementia that require further assessment from the supervising PT and the health care team. 40. Analyze common psychiatric conditions and techniques for boundary setting during treatment sessions. 0 11 41. Discuss societal impacts of physical/somatic and mental illness in the health care system.
