HE 251 - Wilderness First Aid
Associated Term: Fall 2018
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Understand the differences between Wilderness First Aid and First Aid in an urban environment. 2. Assess a responsive and unresponsive person in a wilderness setting. 3. Develop the ability to identify and care for breathing emergencies. 4. Recognize the signals of a cardiac emergency and know how to care for someone who is having a cardiac emergency including CPR. 5. Demonstrate how to care for soft tissue wounds and bleeding emergencies. 6. Identify shock and take measures to control it. 7. Identify and care for strains, sprains, dislocations, and fractures. 8. Identify the signals of sudden illness including fainting, seizures, diabetic emergencies, stroke, poisoning, heat illness, cold emergencies and altitude sickness. 9. Identify possible head and spinal injuries and demonstrate how to care for them in a wilderness environment. 10. Evaluate an injured or ill person to determine if evacuation from the outdoor setting is needed. 11. Improvise methods of transporting an injured or ill person to a safe environment. 12. Respond to injuries caused by environmental hazards such as lightning.
