Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate reliability by meeting participation standards
2. Use laboratory equipment appropriately, efficiently, and effectively for course assignments, self-assessments, and peer and instructor communication
3. Demonstrate informed consent and protection of patient privacy during laboratory activities
4. Document accurate, timely and thorough treatment information for patient case simulations using SOAP format.
5. Research and develop a follow-up study from an assigned research activity
6. Measure vital signs (HR, RR, O2 sat, BP)
7. Demonstrate precautions and techniques to ensure protection of self and patient during patient care activities
8. Demonstrate correct long term positioning for a student subject in supine, prone, and side lying positions
9. Safely perform appropriate transfers during simulated patient problems requiring a range of assistance from minimum to maximum in the following situations: bed to/from wheelchair, bed repositioning, bed to/from gurney, supine to/from sitting, sit to/from stand
10. Safely perform appropriate gait and locomotion training using an assistive device during a simulated patient problem requiring a range of assistance.
11. Assess pain, skin, and compression therapy for treating soft tissue pathology
12. Modify the treatment and/or intervention according to the pain response
13. Demonstrate safe and effective application of the following physical agents to a person with a musculoskeletal or neuromuscular impairment: ice massage, ice pack, hot pack, infrared, whirlpool, ultrasound, electrical stimulation
14. Demonstrate the safe application of passive, active assisted, and active resistive exercises, stretching, and massage during a student case scenario
15. Recognize and communicate the need for additional information or reassessment from the supervising physical therapist for each of the physical therapy interventions and patient care activities in the course
16. Defend clinical decision making during skill check and laboratory practice and examination
