ANTH 229 - Chicano Culture
Associated Term: Spring 2015
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Apply analytical skills to social phenomena in order to understand human behavior: Understanding of the general outlines of Mexican American history and culture. Identification and analysis of main economic, political and social forces, factors, and individuals in the evolution and diversity of Chicano identities and cultures. 2. Apply knowledge and experience to foster personal growth and better appreciate the diverse social world in which we live: Compare and contrast Mexican American and Anglo American cultural patterns with regard to concepts of family, religion, ethnic identity. Recognition of the cultural diversity across the Mexican American population. 3. Understand the role of individuals and institutions within the context of society: Discussion of the complex interplay between individual and society in the formation of individual and group ethnic identity. Analysis of the economic, political, social, and historical factors contributing to the formation of this identity, as well as the historical individuals and movements instrumental in the formation of Mexican American ethnic identities. 4. Assess different theories and concepts, and understand the distinctions between empirical and other methods of inquiry: Presentation, analysis, and discussion of the various theories, and related concepts, of ethnicity, ethnic identity, assimilation as these relate to Chicano identities and cultures. 5. Utilize appropriate information literacy skills in written and oral communication: Reading, in-class analysis and discussion of various social science and literary texts by and/or about Mexican-Americans. Take-home essay exams emphasizing reading comprehension and evaluation. 6. Understand the diversity of human experience and thought, individually and collectively: Identification, comparison and contrasting of ethnic cultural characteristics as well as the economic, social, cultural diversity within ethnic groups. 7. Apply knowledge and skills to contemporary problems and issues: Reading, discussion, and analysis of issues surrounding race and ethnicity in America as well as other cultures around the world.
