PTA 101 - Introduction to Clinical Practice 1
Associated Term: Fall 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate reliability by meeting participation standards 2. Use technology appropriately, efficiently, and effectively for course assignments, self-assessments, and peer and instructor communication 3. Document accurate and thorough treatment information for course-specific patient case simulations using SOAP format. 4. Discuss the importance of evidence-based practice and provide current examples of evidence-based practice for various physical therapy interventions 5. Describe precautions and techniques to ensure protection of self and patient during patient care activities 6. Describe principles of patient transfers and types of transfers 7. Describe ambulatory and seated assistive devices, select devices according to patient need, and recognize signs and symptoms of misfit 8. Describe common soft tissue pathologies (acute and chronic) 9. Describe theory and application principles of physical agents used to promote healing, functional recovery and pain management 10. Identify indications, contraindications, precautions, safety considerations, and expected outcomes for interventions, including any variations by patient characteristics (age and/or disease) for physical agents covered in this course 11. Identify, indications, contraindications, precautions and safety considerations and expected outcomes for ROM, balance, massage, and stretching 12. Recognize and communicate the need for additional information or reassessment from the supervising physical therapist for each of the physical therapy interventions and patient care activities in the course 13. Illustrate the selection, application, documentation, expected outcome and PT communication for a case involving soft-tissue pathology
