RT 251 - Pulmonary Diagnostics and Monitoring Lab
Associated Term: Spring 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Accurately identify common cardiopulmonary symptoms and relate them to the manifestation of specific respiratory diseases 2. Describe the manifestations of aging in older adults and to explain how these changes impact the delivery of respiratory care to this population 3. Demonstrate the process of a complete physical patient examination and relate how each component impacts or is affected by the pulmonary system 4. Describe the components and results of a neurological exam and to identify how they relate to the care provided by an RCP 5. Discuss the specific significance of various laboratory tests in relation to the respiratory system and pulmonary disorders 6. Classify arterial blood gas results and make recommendations in the management of the patient with respiratory dysfunction 7. Apply ATS standards for performance of pulmonary function tests, interpret and correlate results with the underlying disease states, offer recommendations for disease management based on test results 8. Identify and differentiate between the radiological studies utilized within the scope of respiratory care, compare and contrast normal studies from common presentations for a variety of pulmonary disorders 9. Discuss the indications and significance of bronchoscopy; identify the role of the respiratory care practitioner in this procedure 10. Identify the normal pattern of sleep, common sleep disorders and the symptoms associated with them, and the components of a polysomnogram 11. Describe the relationship of nutrition and respiration by explaining nutritional needs and requirements, metabolism, the respiratory quotient and nutritional assessment
