ENG 240 - Nature Literature
Associated Term: Spring 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Thoughtfully examine various definitions of "nature" 2. Recognize, understand, and evaluate their own views of humans' relationships with nature. 3. Know how to evaluate works of literature that express humanity's mythological, theological, philosophical, and scientific views of nature. 4. Examine and articulate characteristics for classic, romantic, naturalistic, and existential views of our relationship with nature. 5. Evaluate how works of literature use nature to comment on humanity's condition or predicament in this world. 6. Evaluate how works of literature use nature to comment on humanity's condition or predicament in this world. 7. Compare different cultures' visions of nature. 8. Discuss the descriptive and symbolic value of natural images in literature. 9. Distinguish between connotation and denotation and demonstrate how connotative language helps shape major aspects of the literary tradition. 10. Demonstrate ability to use interpretive frameworks to investigate contextual meanings of literature.
