PTA 103 - Introduction to Clinical Practice 2
Associated Term: Winter 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate reliability by meeting participation standards 2. Use technology appropriately, efficiently, and effectively for course assignments, self-assessments, and peer and instructor communication 3. Document accurate and thorough treatment information for course-specific patient case simulations using SOAP format. 4. Review and classify common data generated from a patient history (medications, systems assessment, communication status, tests and measures, functional mobility, assistive/adaptive equipment, circulation, nerve function, environment/home/work barriers, gait, motor function, etc). 5. Describe the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, neuromuscular, renal, gastrointestinal and genitourinary diseases and disorders across the life span. 6. Demonstrate safe and effective case-simulation practice for patients (acute and chronic) with general medical conditions 7. Identify common medical/surgical interventions for pathology of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and integument systems. 8. Describe basic principles and indications for aerobic conditioning 9. Describe laboratory tests, measures and diagnostic medical tests used in the general medical population. 10. Describe the principles of universal design and provide examples of universal design in the home, hospital, and community settings. 11. Describe, perform and document outcomes of formal assessment measures in the medical population 12. Analyze how medical conditions, reimbursement, social support, health care team members, and the quality of the PT/PTA relationship may impact physical therapy outcomes. 13. Identify and discuss factors that affect PTA productivity and time management in the health care setting. 14. Integrate knowledge from interventions for soft tissue inflammation (PTA 101/PTA 101L) into selecting interventions for dysfunctions of single system inflammation or disease. 15. Describe and demonstrate the role of the PTA in discharge planning. 16. Identify and describe opportunities for the PTA to be involved in risk management and quality management teams in the health care setting. 17. Identify, describe, demonstrate, and relate the impacts of patient safety and safety awareness as it relates to physical therapy outcomes and interventions. 18. Reflect on the unique experience of the individual and the psychosocial impacts of disease on physical therapy intervention, patient education and communication, and outcomes. 19. Discuss ways to demonstrate empathy in dealing with a patient in pain or under stress.
