MUS 270 - Jazz Theory
Associated Term: Spring 2013
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Identify chord symbols in "lead-sheet" notation. 2. Spell triads, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, suspended and altered dominant chords. 3. Place appropriate scales and modes with chords. 4. Spell arpeggios to fit chord symbols. 5. Analyze chord progressions in major, minor and modal tonalities. 6. Identify key centers. 7. Understand functional and modal harmony. 8. Spell guide tones (3rd and 7th) for any given chord symbol. 9. Write typical cycle of fourth's progressions in major and minor keys. 10. Play on piano chords in closed position, drop 2 and drop 2 and 4 positions. 11. Reharmonize chord progressions. 12. Compose in the following forms: 12-bar blues, 32-bar song form.
