Application of basic mathematics to everyday life and
business situations. Everyday topics include mathematics for
personal finance, mathematics applied to personal health,
mathematics applied to household and yard, and mathematics
found in newspapers and magazines. Business topics include
applications involving payroll, simple and compound
interest, discounts, markup and markdown, annuities,
investments, and sales tax. Additional topics may be chosen
from mathematics applied to travel, recreation and sports,
world resources and social issues. Basic skills in
fractions, decimals, percents and ratios will be assumed.
The course will develop skills in measurement, metric
system, signed numbers, graphs and tables, and introductory
probability and statistics. The course will focus on group
work, investigations, and projects with assessment to
include portfolios and journals. Scientific calculator
required.
