G 201 - Earth Materials & Plate Tecton
The Geology 201, 202, 203 sequence is intended for science majors or other students with a strong interest in science. Geology majors should enroll in G 201, 202, 203. Most sections offer an optional one-day field trip, for which an additional fee may be charged. Beginning Fall 2002, students may use either or both G 101, 102, 103 or G 201, 202, 203 for science distribution credits. The first term of Geology explores the origin, structure and composition of minerals and igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Advanced topics in plate tectonics, volcanism, rock deformation, earthquake activity, and mountain building are integrated to give an overview of the Earth's dynamic internal processes. Lab work emphasizes identifying minerals and rocks, using earthquake data, interpreting geologic structures and geologic maps, and plate tectonics applications. Students complete an in-depth team study and presentation of selected geological regions, along with several other team problem-solving activities.
