Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the legal guidelines and responsibilities of providing victim care and the lay responder’s role within the EMS system. 2. Demonstrate safety awareness to prevent accident and illness related emergencies. 3. Demonstrate competency in dealing with variety of practical first aid problems; e.g., breathing emergencies, airway obstruction, cardiac emergencies, sudden illnesses, bleeding and musculoskeletal injuries for all age groups. 4. Demonstrate the ability to logically think through the steps of an emergency procedure. 5. Identify the signs and symptoms of life-threatening emergencies that require the immediate activation of the Emergency Medical Services system. 6. Define the signs, symptoms and prevention strategies of the following emergencies; cardiac, breathing, sudden illnesses, musculoskeletal injuries, poisonings, substance abuse, water related, childbirth, temperature extremes and delayed help situations. 7. Describe both structure and function of individual body systems, how they interact with one another, and what can occur if one or more systems fail. 8. Consider the effectiveness of both commercial first aid devices and practical items that can be used to assist in an emergency. 9. Recognize the importance of sustainable and healthy lifestyles in preventing accidents and illness. Required Materials: Technical Requirements: |
