RT 241 - Principles of Mechanical Ventilation Lab
Associated Term: Fall 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. identify the indications, contraindications and hazards of mechanical ventilation. 2. classify a mechanical ventilator based on observation of its performance characteristics 3. describe the effect of variation of physiological factors (e.g. compliance, resistance) on the function of specific mechanical ventilators used in laboratory assignments. 4. identify ventilator malfunction and perform appropriate corrective measures 5. perform ventilator setting adjustments on ventilators used in laboratory assignments 6. correctly identify causes of activation of ventilator alarms 7. systematically compare the function of commonly used ventilators, with special emphasis on their advantages and disadvantages 8. perform routine ventilator setup and change maneuvers on commonly used ventilators 9. describe methods for determining readiness and the various approaches used to wean patients from mechanical ventilation
