HE 222 - Consumer Health
Associated Term: Fall 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Understand the role of gender, culture, ethnicity and socioeconomic status involved in health disparities (i.e., the difference in incidence, prevalence, mortality and burden of disease and other health conditions among certain special populations). 2. Recognize the effectiveness of treatments available for various health conditions and diseases. 3. Understand the process of self-diagnosis and self-care and when to consult a physician. 4. Analyze health advertisements and information to determine accuracy of claims. 5. Compare and contrast different sources of alternative health methods. 6. Identify services and quality of care available at different health care facilities. 7. Analyze various insurance plans. 8. Understand the process of dying and funeral and burial options. 9. Prepare an annual budget with health care costs such as products, services and insurance. 10. Take action on a poor quality or misrepresented health product or service with reference to consumer laws and agencies.
