Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Define terminology as presented in this course 2. Understand ionizing radiation and basic principles of x-ray generation 3. Understand factors influencing image formation and image receptors 4. Know the biological effects of radiation 5. Know radiological health protection and safety measures 6. Know radiographic film composition 7. Understand legal issues and guidelines related to dental radiology 8. Know dark room procedures including: film processing, maintenance of darkroom and darkroom equipment, quality assurance and record keeping 9. Demonstrate knowledge of quality assurance procedures 10. Know normal radiographic landmarks, artifacts and shadows as they appear on film 11. Know appropriate radiographic surveys, film type and record keeping 12. Know intraoral radiographic techniques including paralleling and bisecting 13. Know correct film mounting procedures 14. Know correct film viewing techniques 15. Show understanding of appropriate aseptic techniques in the radiology operatories and darkroom 16. Have an understanding of radiation as a benefit and hazard to society 17. Know common radiographic errors (exposure and darkroom) 18. Understand the concept of informed consent prior to taking radiographs 19.
