BA 251 - Supervisory Management
Associated Term: Fall 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Successfully use positive reinforcement in -many different applications. 2. Define exactly what a supervisor is and what important roles a supervisor performs. 3. Understand what people today want from their jobs. 4. Explain how to protect one's power and be effective. 5. Explain the importance of scientific management in relationship to a more humanistic style of management. 6. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of participative management. 7. Go beyond the theories of Maslow and Herzberg and apply simple but effective motivational techniques. 8. Explain the role of money as a motivator, understanding where it is not a motivator. 9. Choose the leadership style that is most appropriate for them and that will be most effective with specific employees. 10. Apply a sense of priorities and decide quickly which actions to take in semi-emergency situations. 11. Identify problems and choose effective solutions. 12. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of group decision-making and when and when not to use it. 13. Understand the power of planning. 14. Involve employees in building an effective action plan for accomplishing goals and objectives. 15. Understand the dangers of a "management by exception" mentality. 16. Apply effective time management techniques. 17. Understand the importance of a workable chain of command policy. 18. Participate wisely in recruiting and hiring excellent employees. 19. Participate wisely in orientation and training activities. 20. Explain the purpose of performance appraisals and how to successful use them. 21. Apply different methods of communications, keeping the channels open and the employees well-informed. 22. Run meetings in an efficient and effective manner. 23. Define discipline and explain how to administer it. 24. Explain the importance of maintaining a safe work-place. 25. Understand where stress comes from and its impact in the work-place. 26. Explain the important role of labor unions and best to supervise in this environment. 27. Explain the importance of setting high standards and expectations.
