WR 095 - College Writing Fundamentals
Associated Term: Summer 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Use active reading strategies in comprehension and retention of reading material. 2. Recognize the main ideas in paragraphs and the thesis statement in longer readings. 3. Identify organizational patterns in readings. 4. Recognize and evaluate the effectiveness of supporting details in paragraphs and longer readings. 5. Formulate inferences based on in-depth readings. 6. Use pre-draft skills to plan focused, well-organized paragraphs and multi-paragraph essays. 7. Write unified, coherent, and adequately developed paragraphs with clear topic sentences. 8. Write well-developed essays that include a thesis statement and unified, coherent, and adequately developed paragraphs with clear topic sentences. 9. Recognize and use a variety of options for introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. 10. Demonstrate control of a variety of organizational strategies at the paragraph and at the essay level, e.g. narrative, comparison, contrast, cause-effect, classification/division, and definition. 11. Write summaries of reading material. 12. Use appropriate transitions between sentences and between paragraphs. 13. Critique constructively and revise his/her own work and the work of others. 14. Apply sentence combining techniques to achieve stylistic variety. 15. Recognize and correct common errors in sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar. 16. Correctly use participles, gerunds, infinitives, appositives, and parallelism.
