ENG 100 - Children's Literature
Associated Term: Summer 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Distinguish between connotation and denotation and demonstrate how connotative language shapes major parts of the Chapter CL novels and poetry. 2. Demonstrate an awareness of the chronology of Classic 19th century authors and illustrators. 3. Recognize the development of the Anglo-Saxon history of works for children: both picture books and in chapter books. 4. Demonstrate a rudimentary understanding of poetic conventions, e.g. alliteration, meter, blank verse, etc. as they appear in CL poetry. 5. Become familiar with a basic criterion for evaluating CL, and the guides and reference books that can be used for book selection as used by libraries, teachers, and others working with children. 6. Recognize the emergence of the changes in the role of women and minorities in picture and chapter books. 7. Complete and alphabet a story project that can be used in the future in the classroom. 8. Walk into any situation with children. Recognize LC books or materials and successfully present them to a young audience. 9. Assess multi-media and multicultural productions and use them for the education of children. 10. Demonstrate ability to use interpretive frameworks to investigate contextual meanings of literature.
