SOC 225 - Social Problems
Associated Term: Spring 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Apply analytical skills to social phenomena in order to understand human behavior. Utilize sociological theory and research to analyze social problems. 2. Apply knowledge and experience to foster personal growth and better appreciate the diverse social world in which we live. Explores social problems experienced by diverse social groups in the U.S. and globally. Students encouraged to critically reflect on their own perspectives and values as they work with course materials. 3. Understand the role of individuals and institutions within the context of society. Analyzes social problems as arising from social forces, including practices, policies, and traditions of established institutions. Encourages students to consider how their own actions may contribute to existing problems or could be effective in addressing problems. 4. Assess different theories and concepts, and understand the distinctions between empirical and other methods of inquiry. Source materials utilize multiple sociological theories and research methods to develop core concepts. Addresses the process by which a phenomenon comes to be defined as a problem in society, and how problems are framed in public discourse. 5. Utilize appropriate information literacy skills in written and oral communication. Core concepts build vocabulary to formulate meaningful problem statements from a sociological perspective. Course materials include qualitative and quantitative data from a variety of sources. Information is presented in oral, visual, and written formats. Opportunities for discussion and writing provided. 6. Understand the diversity of human experience and thought, individually and collectively. Recognizes the significance of globalization and social differentiation (including race, class and gender) for understanding how people experience and respond to social problems. 7. Apply knowledge and skills to contemporary problems and issues. Sociological perspectives and research are used to describe and analyze contemporary social problems. Identifies social forces that can limit or improve the likelihood that knowledge will be applied to address a social problem.
