MUS 226 - Sight-reading and Ear Training (Third Term)
Associated Term: Spring 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Sing any chromatic scale degree keynote. 2. Given a note, sing another note a specific interval up or down within the range of a P8. 3. Sing the root, third, fifth, or seventh of a major, dominant, minor, half-diminished, or full diminished seventh chord given one of the chord tones. 4. Count and perform eight measure rhythmic patterns in compound meters in a two to four part piece, at a moderate tempo, that include ties and note (or rest) values from a dotted half to a sixteenth note in duration, maintaining tempo, with a minimum of 85% accuracy. 5. Sound out and sing short melodies in major, minor and church modes which employ simple, compound, complex meters of two, three, and four beat groupings, maintaining key center and tempo, given the key note with a minimum accuracy of 85% in pitch and rhythm, using solfeggio (hand signs optional). 6. Find starting notes to all parts in a multi part piece by using intervals, solfeggio and notes of reference. 7. Lead an ensemble by establishing and maintaining proper tempo (adagio and allegro) using the appropriate conducting pattern for a piece that is in an undivided duple, triple or quadruple meter. 8. Determine the correctness of a part that is performed, and offer meaningful musical criticism to the player if the part is incorrect.
