LA 105 - Civil Litigation
Associated Term: Spring 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Develop an initial client interview checklist and be able to express the reasons why the questions are relevant. 2. Describe the investigation and fact gathering necessary for possible settlement of claims before initiation of a lawsuit. 3. Draft a complaint, answer, and motion or reply with supporting memorandum. 4. Draft interrogatories, requests for admission, answer to these documents, and have a basic understanding of other forms of discovery. 5. Explain the manner in which pretrial statements by a party or witness may be used for purposes of trial. 6. Describe the pretrial and trial procedure and the role of the paralegal in assisting the attorney in these stages. 7. List the sources of civil rules and rules of evidence. 8. Evaluate and apply the rules of ethics and the code of professional responsibility as they would apply in an instructor-selected civil litigation fact pattern. 9. Draft and present jury instructions for an instructor-selected civil litigation fact pattern. 10. Draft a brief in support of a motion for summary judgment.
