GEOG 201 - World Regional Geography
Associated Term: Spring 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Apply analytical skills to social phenomena in order to understand human behavior: Apply geographic spatial analysis, social science models and geographic methodology to understand regions. 2. Apply knowledge and experience to foster personal growth and better appreciate the diverse social world in which we live: Apply geographic knowledge to understand importance of “place”, diversity of culture regions, diversity of natural environments and the resulting cultural activities that include impacts of globalization. 3. Understand the role of individuals and institutions within the context of society: Reading material, current events and structured class discussions focus on cultural influence, globalization and human alteration of the natural and cultural environment through modern technology. 4. Assess different theories and concepts, and understand the distinctions between empirical and other methods of inquiry: Course covers multiple geographic theories, concepts and methods used to understand regions. Discussion of models and maps based on empirical data, and qualitative data show how social scientific inquiry supports or does not support regional assumptions. 5. Utilize appropriate information literacy skills in written and oral communication: Information Literacy is achieved by geographic activities, documentaries, and use of online databases and search engines for research. 6. Understand the diversity of human experience and thought, individually and collectively: Language and religion are introduced as cultural constructs to show differences and the diversity of cultural views. 7. Apply knowledge and skills to contemporary problems and issues: Current cultural events and natural disasters are integrated as regions undergo change.
