EMT 170 - Emergency Response Communication/Documentation

Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the communication phases of an EMS event. 2. Identify roles of verbal, written and electronic EMS communications. 3. Identify importance of communication when providing EMS. 4. Diagram a basic model of communication. 5. List factors that impede effective verbal communications. 6. List factors that enhance verbal communications. 7. List factors that impede effective written communications. 8. List factors that enhance written communications. 9. Identify importance of proper terminology in EMS communications. 10. Identify importance of proper verbal communications in EMS. 11. Identify technology used to collect and exchange patient and/or scene information electronically. 12. Recognize legal status of electronic patient medical information. 13. Identify local EMS communications components, function and use. 14. Identify/differentiate between: simplex, multiplex, duplex, trunked, digital communications, cellular telephone, facsimile, and computer. 15. Describe how EMS dispatcher functions as part of EMS team. 16. List appropriate information to be gathered by EMS dispatcher. 17. Identify role of EMS dispatch in a typical EMS event. 18. Identify importance of pre-arrival instructions in an EMS event. 19. Describe functions and responsibilities of Federal Communications Commission. 20. Describe purpose of verbal communication of patient information to hospital. 21.
