Syllabus Information
PTA 205 - PT Interventions - Complex Medical Dysfunctions
Associated Term: Winter 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. 2. Describe how neuromuscular pathologies can affect cardiovascular and pulmonary function. 3. Document vital signs and signs and symptoms of cardiovascular endurance during a home-simulation functional activity. 4. Describe physical therapy examination, evaluation, and intervention tools and skills used in individuals with primary or secondary cardiovascular and pulmonary problems and which are appropriate for the PTA. 5. Define and describe the clinical symptoms of electrolyte imbalance. 6. Describe the signs and symptoms indicating that the PTA should instruct the patient to stop exercising during a case simulation of a complex medical condition. 7. Describe the active breathing cycle and deviations associated with cardiopulmonary disorders. 8. Describe skin changes that are consistent with chronic arterial insufficiency. 9. Describe complex medical conditions that may result in lymphatic system disorders. 10. Describe techniques to facilitate lymphatic flow in the extremities. 11. Describe complex medical diagnoses that result in connective tissue dysfunction. 12. Identify upper extremity splinting options for a patient with connective tissue dysfunction. 13. Describe chronic complications associated with diabetes. 14. Communicate changes in skin condition during prosthetic gait training to the supervising PT during a case simulation. 15. Describe gait deviations that may indicate a need for improved prosthetic fit and communicate findings to the supervising physical therapist. 16. Describe types of upper and lower extremity prostheses and basic prostheses application principles. 17. Describe compression techniques for post-operative stump care. 18. Describe indications for a change in wheelchair seating or positioning in a patient with complex medical conditions. 19. Describe wheelchair seating and positioning modifications for a post-operative amputation case study for wound and edema management 20. Identify styles and resources for appropriate footwear for the patient with diabetes. 21. Describe diagnostic terms used to document wound healing phases. 22. Assesses and documents wound attributes during a case simulation. 23. Differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue changes for a patient case scenario. 24. Describe the importance of sensation assessment and sensory changes for effective wound healing during a case simulation. 25. Describe the clinical utility of wound assessment tools. 26. Describe new technology used for measuring and reporting wound healing. 27. Define eschar and slough. 28. Describe precautions for dressing removal during a case simulation 29. Practice sterile technique with any wound contact 30. Define and describe indications and procedures for mechanical debridement and enzymatic debridement during a case simulation. 31. Describe properties of topical agents used in enzymatic and autolytic debridement. 32. Describe the importance of effective pain management in wound care and wound outcomes. 33. Provide an example of a functional outcome for a patient receiving physical therapy treatment for wound management. 34. Describe interdisciplinary treatment and discharge planning for a complex medical patient during a case-simulation. 35. Document clinical wound measurement, wound characteristics, functional mobility status and outcomes of patient education in self-management for coordination of discharge planning with the interdisciplinary team and the supervising PT. 36. Discuss the importance of body weight and energy expenditure in successful wound healing outcomes. 37. Describe vascular testing used to assess etiology and prognosis of vascular ulcers. 38. Discuss the impact of psychosocial, cultural, and economic factors in outcomes for wound healing. 39. Explain the process of scar formation. 40. Identify impairments caused by scar formation. 41. Describe interventions used to treat impairments related to scar formation. 42. Understand categorization of burns and percent of burn 43. Describe stretching and splinting procedures to prevent contractures of burns. 44. Describe psychosocial impacts of burns on functional independence training. 45. Describe indications for modalities in the treatment of wound and burns. 46. Describe the physiological effects of relaxation and visualization exercises in the patient with compromised immunity. 47. Describe functional outcomes of relaxation and visualization exercise practice. 48. Describe isolation environments and techniques when providing care to the immuno-compromised patient. 49. Discuss appropriate roles of the PTA when taught or asked to use complementary therapies as part of intervention both within traditional and alternative environments. 50. Communicate understanding of the rationale for PT interventions for a patient with a complex medical condition through case study activities and analysis. 51. Selects, applies, modifies, and assesses patient response and progression through the plan of care (including discharge planning) and communicates patient status to the supervising PT for a patient with a complex medical dysfunction in the acute setting.
