HO 103 - Health Literacy and Communication
Associated Term: Winter 2014
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Recognize the correlation between health and literacy, as a public health issue and from the perspective of the individual. 2. Examine the definition of health literacy and implications for individuals and populations at risk. 3. Explore the factors that affect health literacy and identify barriers and limitations in the communication and understanding of health related information. 4. Identify and compare how poor health literacy influences access to health care, understanding complex health information and materials, utilizing health prevention and screening care and self management in chronic disease. 5. Understand the roles of civic and cultural literacy on health literacy and communication of health information. 6. Compare health information resources and discuss how this affects patient-professional communication and the value and complications this information can be in achieving health literacy and communication goals (positive health-related outcomes). 7. Acquire improved skills in identifying literacy needs as demonstrated by the written and verbal application of principles of health literacy and communication of health care information.
