Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1- Describe models and theories of addiction and other problems related to substance abuse 2- Explain basic concepts related to research methods in the social and behavioral sciences 3- List sources of addiction-related literature from multiple disciplines 4- Explain how social, political, economic and cultural systems, gender, and life styles impact drug-taking activities and addiction 5- Describe the history of licit and illicit drug use 6- Identify risk and resiliency factors for substance use 7- Describe the incidence and prevalence of substance abuse disorders in the general population and major demographic groups 8- Describe the relationship between infectious diseases and substance abuse 9- Describe the behavioral, psychological and physical health and social effects of psychoactive substances on the user and significant others 10- Describe the warning signs, symptoms and varying courses of addiction 11- Describe supported models of treatment and recovery, relapse prevention. 12- Explain the importance of family, social networks and community systems in the treatment and recovery process Required Materials: Technical Requirements: |
