Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. List and provide rationale for indications, contraindications and hazards of mechanical ventilators. 2. Describe the physiological consequences of commonly used modes of mechanical ventilation. 3. Assess case simulations and determine appropriate management approaches to ventilatory support. 4. Describe the functional operation of commonly used ventilators. 5. Describe currently used monitoring techniques and devices and provide rationale for their use. 6. Describe adjunctive airway pressure maneuvers, list indications for, and limitations of each maneuver. 7. Describe unique concerns associated with mechanical ventilatory support in the home. 8. List indications for "weaning" patients from mechanical ventilatory support. 9. Describe commonly used "weaning" protocols and their respective limitations.
